What is a mentally healthy workplace?

A mentally healthy workplace is one where employees feel supported, respected, and safe to talk about their mental health. It’s a place where mental health is treated as a collective responsibility and is integrated into the workplace culture and strategy.

Here are some characteristics of a mentally healthy workplace:

  • Positive culture: Employees feel happy coming to work and are able to do their best work
  • Mental health support: Mental health support is tailored to the needs of individuals and teams
  • Risk management: Stress and other risks to mental health are managed
  • Zero tolerance for discrimination: There is a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination
  • Support for people with mental health conditions: People with mental health conditions are supported, and the workplace helps them to stay at or return to work
  • Physical and mental health are equally important: The workplace places the same importance on both mental and physical health and safety

Mentally healthy workplaces can benefit both the employees and the business. Businesses that invest in mental health are more likely to be productive and innovative, and to attract and retain top talent.

World Mental Health Day 2024: Mental health at work

Work can have a huge impact on our mental health. It can be good for our mental health, giving us a sense of purpose, boosting our self-worth, and providing opportunities to connect with others. But it can also be a source of stress and anxiety and contribute to developing or worsening mental health problems.

15% of UK workers are estimated to have an existing mental health condition

Many people spend a lot of their time working, whether that’s in the community, in an office, a workshop, at home, or many other workplaces. That’s why it’s so important that our workplace supports our mental health, helping us get the mental health benefits of work while reducing the negative impact.

World Mental Health Day Events

This World Mental Health Day, WHO is uniting with partners to highlight the vital connection between mental health and work.

Safe, healthy working environments can act as a protective factor for mental health. Unhealthy conditions including stigma, discrimination, and exposure to risks like harassment and other poor working conditions, can pose significant risks, affecting mental health, overall quality of life and consequently participation or productivity at work.

With 60% of the global population in work, urgent action is needed to ensure work prevents risks to mental health and protects and supports mental health at work.

It is essential for governments, employers, the organizations which represent workers and employers, and other stakeholders responsible for workers’ health and safety to work together to improve mental health at work.

Action to address mental health at work should be done with the meaningful involvement of workers and their representatives, and persons with lived experience of mental health conditions.

By investing efforts and resources in evidence-based approaches and interventions at work, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive at work and in life. Let’s take action today for a healthier future. https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-mental-health-day/2024
